Vote against the Daughters of the American Revolution Membership Integrity Act in both chambers. Congress has no business dictating membership rules to a private organization that just exercised its own democratic process. The DAR's members voted on June 26. They decided. 1,474 to 981. That's how a membership organization is supposed to work. Now a handful of lawmakers want to override that vote by amending the DAR's federal charter to impose their preferred outcome. If Republicans genuinely believe in keeping government out of private institutions, this bill is an embarrassing contradiction of that principle. The DAR is a private nonprofit that has governed itself since 1890. Its members, descendants of the very patriots who fought against government overreach, made their decision through a free and fair vote. This legislation sets a dangerous precedent: that any federally chartered organization can have its membership policies rewritten by whichever party holds power. Block this bill.
