Protect NYC from Unjustified ICE Raids and National Guard Deployment
To: Gov. Hochul
From: A constituent in Sunnyside, NY
October 22, 2025
The recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in New York City's Chinatown has raised serious concerns about the potential for escalating federal interventions in our community. On Tuesday, federal agents conducted a raid on Canal Street, ostensibly targeting criminal activity related to counterfeit goods. However, this action has broader implications for our city's immigrant population and sets a dangerous precedent.
As your constituent, I urge you to take immediate action to protect New York City from further unjustified ICE raids and the looming threat of unnecessary National Guard deployment. The operation in Chinatown caused chaos, with vendors fleeing the area and protesters gathering in response. One individual was even arrested for allegedly assaulting a federal officer, highlighting the tension and potential for violence these actions create.
It is crucial to note that the New York Police Department (NYPD) had no involvement in this federal operation. This lack of coordination between federal and local law enforcement undermines our city's policies and values. Mayor Eric Adams has instructed the NYPD to intervene only if individuals interfere with legal law enforcement actions, but this reactive approach is insufficient to protect our communities.
We must proactively safeguard the rights and well-being of all New Yorkers, including our undocumented residents. City Hall officials have rightly emphasized that undocumented New Yorkers should not be the target of law enforcement. However, we need stronger measures to prevent federal overreach and maintain the trust between our diverse communities and local authorities.
I implore you to:
1. Introduce legislation that limits ICE's ability to conduct raids without local oversight and approval.
2. Oppose any plans for National Guard deployment in New York City for immigration enforcement purposes.
3. Strengthen sanctuary city policies to protect our immigrant communities from unwarranted federal intervention.
4. Allocate resources for legal aid and support services for those affected by ICE operations.
Time is of the essence. With the situation still developing and the threat of further federal action looming, we need your immediate and decisive action to protect the fabric of our diverse city. Please stand up for the rights and safety of all New Yorkers, regardless of their immigration status.
