ICE and DHS are UnAmerican and UnChristian

To: Gov. Huckabee Sanders, Rep. Clowney, Sen. Leding

From: A constituent in Fayetteville, AR

January 25

I am writing as your constituent to express my deep concern about the actions and policies currently being carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). I do not approve of the direction these agencies have taken, and I urge you to provide stronger oversight and accountability. I believe many current enforcement practices raise serious constitutional concerns: First Amendment – This amendment protects freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, the right to peaceful assembly, and the right to petition the government for redress of grievances. Government actions that intimidate communities, discourage people from speaking out, or target individuals based on their beliefs or associations risk chilling these essential freedoms. Second Amendment – This amendment protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Lawful firearm ownership, by itself, is not evidence of criminal intent or violent wrongdoing. Any policy or enforcement posture that treats the mere fact that a person is armed as automatic proof of dangerousness undermines both the spirit and the legal protections of the Second Amendment. Constitutional rights cannot be treated as suspicious behavior when exercised by certain groups but respected for others. Equal and consistent application of this right is essential to maintaining the integrity of the Constitution. Fourteenth Amendment – This amendment guarantees citizenship rights, due process, and equal protection under the law. No person should be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process, and the law must apply equally to all people. Policies that result in unequal treatment, lack of access to fair hearings, or family separation without proper legal safeguards raise serious Fourteenth Amendment concerns. Beyond the legal issues, I urge you to reflect on the moral dimension of these policies. In Matthew 25:40, Jesus says: “Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” If we claim to follow Christ’s teachings, we are called to treat the most vulnerable with dignity, compassion, and humanity. Our immigration policies should reflect those values. I ask you to: • Support meaningful oversight and transparency for ICE and DHS • Advocate for policies that uphold due process and equal protection • Oppose practices that cause unnecessary harm to families and communities Please let me know what steps you are taking to ensure constitutional rights and basic human dignity are respected in immigration enforcement.
