Trump’s Weak “Leadership” Is Hurting America — and Alaska — Congress Must Act

I’m writing to urge you — in the strongest possible terms — to take immediate action to rein in Donald Trump’s disastrous, dangerous leadership before more irreparable harm is done to our country — and to Alaska. When Trump returned to office, the U.S. economy was strong. Inflation had declined, the stock market was climbing, consumer confidence was growing, and after years of fears, we had finally achieved a miraculous “soft landing” — avoiding a recession that had seemed inevitable. America’s economy was the envy of the world. In just over three months under Trump’s reckless and incompetent leadership, that progress has been completely reversed: • Stocks have tanked. • Prices are rising, not falling, despite Trump’s promises. • Inflation is surging again. • Consumer confidence has collapsed. • Businesses are freezing investments because of the chaos created by Trump’s incoherent, poorly thought-out “economic strategy,” including unnecessary tariffs that triggered a global trade war. • Grocery prices — the costs everyday Americans feel the most — continue to climb, despite his “Day One” promises to lower them. Here in Alaska, the impacts are particularly alarming: • Tourism, one of our state’s largest industries, is already seeing cancellations and warnings issued by foreign governments, especially Canada and Europe, because of stricter U.S. entry rules and instability. Our communities will lose millions in visitor revenue this year alone if this continues. • As a commercial fishing family, we are deeply concerned that Trump’s chaotic tariffs and broken trade relationships will hammer Alaska’s fishing families. We rely on exports — and retaliatory tariffs from countries like Japan and China will take a direct, painful cut out of our income. • Alaska’s economy is resource-dependent and deeply connected to global markets. Trump’s reckless policies are already threatening our ability to sell what we produce — whether it’s seafood, energy, or tourism services. The collapse isn’t limited to the economy. We are now facing a full-blown constitutional crisis: • Trump has openly defied multiple court orders — including a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court ruling. • He has threatened Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to manipulate monetary policy for political gain. • He has undermined our alliances, aligning the United States with Russia and alienating NATO and our democratic allies. • We are seeing mass deportations without due process, attacks on public education, environmental destruction, and widespread job losses. Congress must uphold its constitutional duty. It must move swiftly to rein in Trump’s incompetent leadership before more damage is done to our economy, our democracy, and our standing in the world.
