Co-sponsor Residency-Based Taxation for Overseas Americans
To: Rep. Scanlon
From: A constituent in King of Prussia, PA
December 18
The United States is the only developed country that requires its citizens to file tax returns regardless of where they live. Research shows the experience of filing from overseas to be complicated, expensive, and prone to innocent but intensely penalized mistakes. Dual tax residency invites discrimination against overseas US citizens, and to cap it all off, it's inefficient for actually generating tax revenue. This bill, in need of bipartisan support, modernizes the tax code, brings the US in line with global best practices, and establishes a fairer system in which nonresident US citizens would still be taxed (automatically!) on US sourced income. The idea enjoys widespread support, including from Democrats Abroad, Republicans Overseas, and Tax Fairness for Americans Abroad. Transitioning to residence-based taxation would lift this undue burden from millions of overseas, encourage many to come into tax compliance, and increase US competitiveness abroad. I urge you to co-sponsor this commonsense, bipartisan legislation that will finally resolve a decades long issue.
