Fund Emergency Support for Displaced Trans Americans Now

To: Rep. Andrews, Sen. Nesbitt, Gov. Whitmer

July 28

Trans women are women. Trans men are men. And right now, trans Americans are fleeing their home states at ten to twenty times the rate Black Americans fled Jim Crow at its peak. That is not hyperbole — it is what the data show. Nine percent of trans adults moved to a different state in just seven months after the 2024 election. In states with restrictive laws, the annualized displacement rate hits 29%. This should never happen anywhere in this country. Our state is a destination for internally displaced people arriving with almost nothing. Trans-led organizations are already overwhelmed — one nonprofit helped 1,500 people relocate in just seven months after the 2024 election, compared to 70 in the prior eighteen months. Thirty-four percent of trans adults live in poverty, 18% are unemployed, and 30% have experienced homelessness. Eighty-two percent of those who want to move say cost is the only barrier. Allocate emergency funding now for housing, relocation assistance, healthcare, and gender-affirming care. Hold the line on every protection already on the books. And use your platform to push back federally — no American should have to flee their home state to survive.
