Block the Transfer of IDEA and Special Education Oversight Out of the Education Department

To: Rep. Ciscomani, Sen. Gallego, Sen. Kelly

From: A constituent in Tucson, AZ

June 19

Stop the Trump administration's transfer of special education oversight to HHS and student civil rights enforcement to DOJ. Use every legislative tool available to block this — defund it, legislate against it, hold hearings, whatever it takes. This is not a bureaucratic reshuffling. This is a deliberate strategy to dismantle the Department of Education without congressional approval, and 7.5 million students with disabilities will pay the price. I teach in a public school and I'm raising a child who depends on IDEA protections. I know exactly what happens when federal oversight gets fragmented across agencies that weren't built for this work. IEPs get delayed. Complaints get lost. Families spend months figuring out which agency to even call. Secretary McMahon is betting that bureaucratic chaos will do what Congress won't authorize. Don't let her win that bet. These kids cannot afford to wait while Washington figures out who's in charge.
