Halt Data Center Expansion and Prioritize Grid Safety Now

To: Sen. Van Hollen, Sen. Alsobrooks, Rep. Elfreth

From: A verified voter in Arnold, MD

July 4

Stop approving new data centers and shut down existing ones until the safety risks they pose to our power grid are fully addressed. Our grid infrastructure is not equipped to handle the explosive energy demands these facilities place on it, and continuing to greenlight construction while ignoring those risks is reckless. This needs to stop now, not after the next failure. The grid needs a complete overhaul — not a patch job. Data centers are among the most energy-intensive operations in existence, and their unchecked proliferation is straining a system that was never designed for this load. Residents and businesses are the ones left exposed when the grid buckles. Real people lose power, lose safety, and lose money while corporations keep building. Demand a moratorium on new data center construction and require a full safety review before any existing facility is permitted to continue operating. The grid revamp should be funded and prioritized on the same timeline. This is a public safety issue, and it deserves to be treated like one.
