USAGM: Maintain Independence, Rely on Experienced Journalists

To: Sen. Kelly, Sen. Gallego, Rep. Crane

From: A constituent in Kearny, AZ

May 7

The United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM) should maintain its credibility and independence by relying on its own journalists rather than partnering with news outlets like One America News (OAN). As the official voice representing American values abroad, USAGM must uphold rigorous journalistic standards and avoid potential conflicts of interest or perceptions of bias. While cost-saving measures are understandable, outsourcing news content to a partisan network like OAN risks compromising USAGM's integrity and mission. OAN has faced criticism for spreading misinformation and promoting conspiracy theories, which could undermine USAGM's reputation for factual and objective reporting. Instead of this partnership, USAGM should invest in retaining and expanding its team of experienced journalists who can provide reliable, unbiased coverage without external influence. Maintaining editorial independence is crucial for USAGM to effectively communicate America's principles of democracy, freedom of expression, and transparency to global audiences. By utilizing its own trusted journalistic resources, USAGM can continue to be a credible source of news and information, upholding the highest professional standards expected of the United States' international broadcasting services. This approach will strengthen USAGM's role as a respected voice promoting American values worldwide.
