Protect sensitive locations from ICE arrests, uphold human dignity

To: Sen. Baldwin, Sen. Johnson, Rep. Grothman

December 13

I urge you to write into law the policy that prevents Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from conducting arrests at sensitive locations like schools, hospitals, and places of worship. Rescinding this measure would instill fear and discourage vulnerable communities from accessing essential services. Allowing ICE free rein to make arrests at healthcare facilities could deter people from seeking vital medical treatment, posing a public health risk. Conducting enforcement actions at schools would traumatize children and disrupt their education. Places of worship provide sanctuary, and arrests there would undermine religious freedom. The current policy strikes a reasonable balance, permitting ICE to make arrests at sensitive sites only under limited circumstances like national security concerns or imminent risk of harm. Removing these sensible guardrails is an unnecessary overreach that would spread panic and mistrust. Codifying this policy will prevent callous changes by the incoming administration. Please do this and whatever other actions you can to prevent the mistreatment of migrant workers these policy changes would surely bring about. I implore you to uphold this long-standing practice in the interests of public safety, children's wellbeing, and respect for communities.
