An Open Letter

To: Rep. Graves, Sen. Hawley, Sen. Schmitt

From: A constituent in Plattsburg, MO

February 20

The Supreme Court just told you what your job is – I’m exasperated YOU don’t know. The International Emergency Economic Power Act (IEEPA) does not authorize the President to impose tariffs and SCOTUS has made clear that tariffs are the job of CONGRESS. Chief Justice Roberts wrote, “The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises.” The Framers did not vest any part of the taxing power in the Executive Branch. I asked numerous times WHY you did not assert the power of YOUR office. Due to your inability to do your job, it cost thousands of dollars and almost a year to finally resolve that you failed to do your job. In fact, many of your Republicans know this, per Sen. Rand Paul, "The Supreme Court makes plain what should have been obvious: The power to impose tariffs is very clearly a branch of the power to tax." The Presidents remarks regarding the justices is despicable; you should speak out about this statement. Three equal branches seems to escape him and YOU need to speak up.
