We lost a UN vote 144 to 10. It damaged our reputation and bought us nothing. As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to exercise immediate legislative oversight following the United States’ recent, deeply isolating vote against reappointing UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. The U.S. stood in a tiny minority of ten countries—alongside Russia, Israel, and North Korea—in opposition to France, Germany, the UK, Japan, and the overwhelming majority of the world's democracies. The reappointment passed 144 to 10. Our opposition did not stop the measure; it simply isolated us, damaged our global standing, and bought us zero strategic leverage. Choosing "America Alone" on a vote we lost this decisively does not project strength. It signals weakness and damages our leverage. Ideological isolationism is actively alienating our most trusted international partners and eroding long-term American leadership. Why Isolating the U.S. Subverts Our Strategic Interests: - Eroding Global Alliances: Breaking ranks with core NATO and G7 partners fractures the unified front necessary to address global threat, trading real security for empty posturing. - Creating a Power Vacuum: Surrendering our seat at international bodies invites autocratic rivals like China to step in, redefine global norms, and fill the leadership gap. - Moral and Strategic Hypocrisy: Democracies do not get a pass on human rights simply because autocracies exist. Demanding immunity for ourselves while lecturing others destroys American credibility, alienates key allies, and gives rivals a free pass to dismiss international law. - Financial and Diplomatic Credibility: Threatening to retaliate with funding freezes—while the U.S. already owes nearly $4 billion in unpaid UN dues—does not reform the institution. It simply leaves America without leverage while the world moves on without us. I urge you to take the following concrete actions: 1. Protect UN Funding in Appropriations: Fully fund U.S. assessed dues and address outstanding arrears so America retains an active vote and seat at the table, rather than relying on self-defeating funding freezes as political retaliation. 2. Hold Immediate Committee Oversight Hearings: Convene hearings in the relevant foreign policy committees to investigate how isolated votes impact key alliances and long-term national security strategies. 3. Sponsor a Bipartisan Resolution: Support a "Sense of Congress" resolution reaffirming the United States' commitment to multilateral diplomacy, international human rights frameworks, and strong alliance coordination. 4. Demand Rigorous Diplomatic Standards: Reject nominees for diplomatic and State Department posts who favor ideological isolation over coalition-building, and hold political appointees accountable for strategic failures. Our national security depends on reliable, trustworthy alliances. I expect you to use your voice and vote to reject reckless isolationism and keep America grounded alongside our democratic allies.
