An Open Letter

To: Sen. Cruz, Rep. Johnson, Sen. Cornyn

From: A constituent in Mesquite, TX

February 19

The continued denial or obstruction of access to legal counsel and essential medication for individuals detained by ICE is unacceptable and violates basic standards of human dignity, due process, and lawful detention. No person should be cut off from their attorney or deprived of the medical treatment they depend on simply because they are in government custody. Detention does not erase constitutional protections. Every detained individual has the right to communicate with legal representation without delay, intimidation, or interference. Blocking or limiting that access undermines the justice system and raises serious ethical and legal concerns. Equally alarming is any failure to provide timely medication or appropriate medical care. Withholding prescribed treatment places lives at risk and exposes detainees to unnecessary suffering. This is not a matter of politics — it is a matter of basic human rights and lawful responsibility. We demand the following actions immediately: 1. Unrestricted and timely access to legal counsel for all detainees, including confidential communication. 2. Immediate review of medical protocols to ensure detainees receive prescribed medications without delay. 3. Transparent reporting and accountability for any facility found denying legal or medical access. Silence and inaction are not acceptable. Agencies entrusted with custody have a legal and moral duty to uphold the rights and safety of every person detained. Anything less is a failure of leadership and a betrayal of the principles that justice is supposed to protect. This demand is not optional — it is overdue.
