We can’t just wait for the midterms. There’s a coup ongoing. In ICE, President Trump has created his own private army. It’s terrifying that the administration has appropriated $45 billion for construction of new ICE detention facilities, a 265 percent increase over previous years and more than four times the entire budget of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.These are going to be prisons for political prisoners: In May the administration’s Senior Director for Counterterrorism, Sebastian Gorka, released a new National Counterterrorism Strategy that names “violent left-wing extremists,” “anti-fascists,” and certain religious minorities as principal threats to the United States. And they’ve labeled all Democrats as left-wing extremists whenever they get in the way of the administration’s agenda. In warning of a rolling coup, Richard Gebhardt and Tim Wirth, former members of the Senate, have warned that “Congress must reassert its Article I authority over emergency powers, military deployment on U.S. soil, and the Office of Legal Council’s power to rewrite statute by memo.” Take this seriously. The country is descending fast.
