Today I take pen in hand to write and to urge you to support the impeachment and removal of Russell Vought, Director of the Office of Management and Budget, for high crimes and misdemeanors.
Current and former federal workers across more than 30 agencies have documented systematic violations of federal law that demand congressional action.
In addition, Vought has illegally withheld over $410 billion in congressionally appropriated funding, including $5 billion from the Inflation Reduction Act, in direct violation of the Impoundment Control Act.
He has publicly declared his belief that this law is unconstitutional while serving in an office charged with implementing it. This represents a fundamental assault on Congress's constitutional power of the purse and the separation of powers.
His obstruction of congressional oversight includes removing the apportionment website from public view despite statutory transparency requirements and creating programmatic delays designed to prevent agencies from spending funds as Congress directed.
These actions undermine your authority and the authority of every member of Congress to fulfill their constitutional duties.
Vought's unlawful dismantling of federal agencies has had immediate consequences for your constituents. He directed the closure of USAID, assumed control of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and attempted to fire nearly all staff while dismissing settled cases worth billions including $80 million owed to defrauded service members.
His actions reduce funding for cancer research, disaster recovery assistance, and programs that protect food and water supplies, track epidemics, and respond to natural disasters.
Federal workers from HUD, EPA, FEMA, NIH, and USAID have been punished for raising alarms about these illegal actions. Vought has stated his intent to traumatize civil servants and described career federal workers as villains. Although lower courts have declared his actions illegal, the Supreme Court has stayed these rulings, enabling continued lawlessness.
Allowing Vought to continue sends a message that Congress no longer respects the rule of law or maintains the system of checks and balances.
I urge you to impeach and convict Russell Vought and remove him from all positions in the executive branch. Thank you.
