I was taught that in America, the government answers to the Constitution — not the other way around. That principle feels increasingly fragile. Across the country, ICE operations have been marked by reports of warrantless entries, aggressive tactics in residential neighborhoods, masked agents without clear identification, and expanding detention systems that strain due process protections. Whether one supports strict immigration enforcement or more lenient policy is beside the point. The Constitution is not contingent on political preference. We cannot say we believe in the Fourth Amendment while tolerating home intrusions without judicial warrants. We cannot say we believe in due process while normalizing detention practices that limit meaningful access to counsel. We cannot say we believe in limited government while funding enforcement structures that operate with insufficient transparency or oversight. Public safety does not require abandoning constitutional restraint. Enforcement does not require intimidation. Authority does not require opacity. What troubles me most is not only the conduct itself, but the absence of strong congressional intervention. Oversight is not hostility toward law enforcement; it is fidelity to the oath of office each of you swore to uphold. I am asking you to draw a clear line: Support immigration enforcement that operates within constitutional boundaries, and reject practices that erode civil liberties in the name of expediency. Demand judicial warrants for residential entries. Require transparency. Insist on accountability when rights are violated. The health of our republic depends less on the power of its agencies and more on the limits placed upon them. I urge you to act accordingly.
