White House freeze of federal grants is illegal and harmful to Iowans

I am writing to express my deep concern about the Trump administration’s unconstitutional decision to freeze all federal grants and loans. This reckless action threatens Iowa’s economy and the well-being of countless residents who depend on federal funding for agriculture, education, disaster relief, and healthcare. I am the director of a small Iowa-based education non-profit. We employ 3 full-time staff and 9 part-time staff, and our funding comes in part from federal grants that would be impacted by this freeze. It would not just mean that our staff would not get paid, but the important work we do that impacts students and teachers would end as well. This money has already been lawfully and constitutionally appropriated by Congress, and there is no lawful mechanism by which the White House can indefinitely interrupt these payments and programs.
Farmers, students, healthcare providers, and communities across our state are now facing uncertainty, with vital programs interrupted. Furthermore, this decision disregards the constitutional separation of powers, undermining the programs authorized by Congress.
I urge you to take swift action to protect Iowa’s interests and demand the immediate restoration of these programs. Thank you for standing up for Iowans during this critical time.
