I am writing as a constituent to urge you to oppose the SAVE Act. While the stated goal of election integrity is important, this legislation would create significant and unnecessary barriers for eligible American citizens attempting to register and vote.
Requiring additional documentary proof of citizenship—beyond the safeguards already in place—would disproportionately impact seniors, rural residents, married individuals who have changed their names, low-income voters, and many others who may not have easy access to original citizenship documents. Many eligible voters do not possess a passport, and replacing birth certificates or other official records can be time-consuming, costly, and, for some, effectively prohibitive. The result would not be improved election security, but the disenfranchisement of lawful voters.
Current federal and state election systems already include multiple verification mechanisms, and documented cases of non-citizen voting remain exceedingly rare. Legislation that risks excluding thousands—or millions—of eligible citizens from participating in elections is not a proportional response to a problem that existing safeguards already address.
I ask that you protect both election integrity and the constitutional right to vote by opposing the SAVE Act and supporting policies that expand secure, accessible voter participation for all eligible Americans.
Thank you for your time and for your service to our state.
