Oppose Clean Reauthorization of FISA Section 702

To: Rep. Smucker

From: A verified voter in Lititz, PA

April 15

I need you to oppose a clean reauthorization of Section 702 of FISA when it comes up for a vote before the April 20th, 2026 deadline. Only support its extension if it includes significant reforms that protect Americans' civil liberties. Section 702's loopholes have been repeatedly abused by the FBI to access communications of peaceful protesters, federal and state lawmakers, Congressional staff, thousands of campaign donors, journalists, and even a judge reporting civil rights violations. Technology has advanced dramatically since 2008, from AI to the explosion of personal data available for purchase, but the law hasn't kept pace. Over one hundred civil liberties groups warned Congress in a March 19th letter that new technological advancements will only create more opportunities for abuse. The law was designed with an expiration date precisely so Congress could reconsider it based on modern technical realities. That moment is now. Vote no on any clean extension and demand real reforms that close the loopholes enabling warrantless surveillance of Americans.
