Block the Department of Homeland Security's planned no-bid contract to outfit ICE officers with electric shock gloves. DHS is moving to spend up to $20 million on thousands of these devices — called G.L.O.V.E.s — with a contract that could be awarded as early as this week. That's my tax money funding a weapon that delivers pain at the push of a button no one else can see. ICE has spent the past year demonstrating it is too quick to use force. Handing agents a tool that can shock someone into compliance in seconds — with no visible activation, no warning to the person being shocked, and no body camera requirement — is not de-escalation. The ACLU has already flagged that the public has no basis for confidence these will be used appropriately. Even the manufacturer warns against using them on children, pregnant women, elderly people, and anyone showing only "verbal defiance." Those warnings mean nothing without enforcement, and ICE's track record gives no reason for trust. Stop this contract before it's finalized.
