An Open Letter

To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff, Rep. Bera

From: A constituent in Mather, CA

January 26

I am writing as a deeply concerned constituent after learning that individuals currently being held in Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, TX are reporting that there is little to no heat inside the facility during this period of below-freezing temperatures. According to these reports, people are so cold that they cannot speak with their loved ones without their teeth chattering. They are using towels and any materials available to try to keep warm. No one — regardless of immigration status — should be subjected to unsafe, inhumane conditions, especially when freezing temperatures pose a real risk to health and life. Detention facilities are responsible for providing basic necessities, including adequate heating. Failing to do so is not only a moral failure, but a potential violation of minimum standards of care and human rights. I am asking you to urgently: - Investigate these reports immediately - Demand confirmation that adequate heat is being provided - Ensure corrective action is taken without delay - Hold the responsible agencies and contractors accountable This is not about politics. It is about basic human dignity and preventing harm. I urge you to act swiftly to ensure that no one is left to suffer in freezing conditions while in government custody. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to your response and to learning what steps are being taken to remedy this situation.
