The cost of War Hurts Americans 1st
To: Sen. Johnson
From: A constituent in Sturgeon Bay, WI
July 24
Republican president Eisenhower warned of diverting the nation’s tax dollars to war at the expense of the people.
“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed,” he said. America should not be killing people in foreign countries while hundreds of your constituents die because they can not afford healthcare and food assistance has all but stoped entirely so the rich can get tax breaks and bombs can be built.
As the president said:
This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.”
