I am writing with alarm regarding this Republican administration’s calling for American cities to be used as “training grounds” by the U.S. military.
This is unconscionable. American cities are not battlegrounds. They are our homes, where we work, raise our families, and build communities.
Under no circumstances should the American military be ordered to use our homes as training grounds. To do so is to declare war on the very people our Constitution was written to protect.
The Posse Comitatus Act and long-standing democratic tradition draw a clear line between our military’s role in defending the nation from external threats and local policing within our borders. Erasing that line risks unleashing violence against U.S. citizens.
This is not a matter of partisan disagreement. It is a matter of preserving the most basic promise of our democracy, our Constitution: that the government will not turn the army on its own citizens.
My wife and I urge you to:
• Publicly condemn this dangerous development.
• Bar authorization of military deployment in U.S. cities.
• Affirm the constitutional protections forbidding the military from being deployed against the American people.
We urge you to act immediately to block this reckless, anti-American plan before it can advance any further.
