No More Reform Excuses — ICE Must Be Dismantled

To: Rep. Roy, Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn

From: A constituent in Bandera, TX

January 25

I am writing to you today with profound outrage and grave concern about the continuing and escalating abuses of power by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and associated federal immigration enforcement agents. The latest atrocity — the killing of Minneapolis resident and ICU nurse Alex Jeffrey Pretti by a Border Patrol agent on January 24, 2026 — underscores a pattern of deadly, unchecked violence that cannot be tolerated in a constitutional republic. This death comes only weeks after the fatal shooting of Renée Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis mother of three, by an ICE agent on January 7 — an incident now officially ruled a homicide by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office, with multiple gunshot wounds inflicted by a federal officer. These killings are not isolated accidents; they are the inevitable consequence of an agency that operates with minimal accountability, extensive militarized power, and expansive authority to use lethal force against civilians — even law-abiding U.S. citizens. The fact that federal agents have repeatedly blocked state investigators from examining these scenes only exacerbates the appearance of a whitewashed cover-up and further erodes public trust in federal law enforcement. Let me be unequivocal: ICE must be abolished immediately. Its mandate of detention, deportation, and internal immigration enforcement has resulted in repeated deaths, civil liberties violations, and a culture of impunity that poses a direct threat to the safety and constitutional rights of all people in the United States. The Constitution guarantees the right to life, liberty, and due process. Yet, in Minneapolis in January 2026, two unarmed or minimally threatening U.S. citizens were killed by the very agency charged with “protecting” the homeland. This stands in stark opposition to the rule of law. I demand that you: Publicly and unequivocally call for the abolition of ICE. There can be no “reform” of an agency that has demonstrated a systemic propensity for lethal force against civilians. Support immediate legislation to defund and dismantle ICE. Redirect those funds to community-based, humane approaches to immigration, border security, and public safety. Demand independent, transparent investigations of both the Pretti and Good deaths, and advocate for criminal charges where justified. Support oversight hearings into ICE and Border Patrol conduct and the federal Department of Homeland Security’s refusal to allow meaningful state or local investigation. Anything less is a betrayal of your oath to uphold the Constitution and protect the people you were elected to serve. The American people deserve accountability. Victims’ families deserve justice. Our communities deserve safety — not a federal force armed with sovereign immunity and military hardware. I expect a written response outlining your position, actions you will take, and your timeline for doing so.
