The SAVE act prevents voter fraud, in the same way that a nuclear bomb prevents weeds in the front lawn.
The SAVE act is yet another power grab by Trump and the GOP to reduce voter turn out, full stop. It is weakly disguised as an attempt to reduce voter fraud.
Voting is a RIGHT afforded all citizens, not a privilege that Congress allows to some.
If the SAVE act is passed, then In Ohio and in most states, a driver’s license is not sufficient to prove your eligibility to vote. Even the federal REAL ID is insufficient.
Citizens will need a current passport (only half of Americans have ever gotten one) or a birth certificate (most Americans don’t have easy access to these). If you’re a woman who has changed your name after marriage or divorce, you’ll ALSO need to bring proof of that change. These new restrictions already place undue burden on the voting process, creating barriers to vote, mostly for your underserved constituents.
You must also consider the knock-on effect that confusion and ambiguity has on Poll workers. Election poll workers (like me) are mostly part-time volunteers. They usually have 3 hours of training each election cycle. Changing rules from one election year to the next causes confusion.
Most poll workers know that, allowing someone to vote who shouldn’t, can be a criminal offence. While turning away a legal voter, bears no penalty at all. This creates a natural bias, through no fault of their own, to force provisional votes, which as, you may know, usually aren’t counted.
It’s no accident that Trump and the GOP are pushing for this new law in the year of midterm elections. Trump’s reign of terror has destroyed voter support of the GOP. The people have a voice, and the midterms will be their chance to use that voice. By changing the rules last minute, more people will be unaware, fewer will have rime to prepare. More citizens will be disenfranchised and their voices will be thrown out.
You must oppose the SAVE in any way possible, and vote against it if necessary.
