The most consequential decisions of your life

To: Sen. Johnson

From: A constituent in Milwaukee, WI

July 30

I’m writing because I’m genuinely scared for this country, and I don’t say that lightly. America has always prided itself on being a beacon of democracy and strength, but right now it feels like we’re sleepwalking toward a wider war while the people we elected to stop it stay quiet. I’m asking you to have the courage to stand up to this administration, to push back on Trump when it’s warranted, and to support real accountability rather than deference. I’m also deeply concerned about how much influence AIPAC’s donations have over Congress; it’s a documented fact that the group directs enormous sums to a majority of members in both parties, and it’s fair to ask whether that’s shaping votes on matters of war and peace rather than what’s best for Americans. Section 219 of the FY2027 NDAA worries me specifically. It would formally merge U.S. and Israeli military technology, research, and industrial cooperation — locking in an arrangement future Congresses and presidents may not be able to unwind. Members from both parties, including Republicans like Thomas Massie, have called this dangerous and tried to strip it from the bill. I’m asking you to take that concern seriously when the Senate takes up its version. Especially since Israel has attacked the United States forces on multiple occasions, including the USS liberty. They are using American soldiers and munitions as disposable resources to push their agenda. How does this not upset you? More broadly, I’m asking you to resist expanded mass surveillance, to insist on real congressional oversight of executive power, and to do everything you can to keep us out of WWIII that the entire world would pay for. This may be one of the most consequential votes of your career. Please stand on the right side of history.
