The government's detention of Mahmoud Khalil, a lawful permanent resident, without charges is a blatant violation of the First Amendment right to free speech and peaceful protest. His role as a lead negotiator for the Gaza solidarity encampment at Columbia University was an exercise of constitutionally protected civil liberties that must be safeguarded. The attempt to strip Mahmoud of his legal residency and deport him solely due to his involvement in lawful protests sets a dangerous precedent that undermines fundamental freedoms for all. The right to voice dissent and criticize the government is a cornerstone of democracy that has long distinguished this nation. Selective prosecution and retaliation against protesters cannot be tolerated, especially when government officials have repeatedly made inflammatory and objectionable statements without repercussion. Upholding free speech necessitates protecting it for everyone, regardless of viewpoint. Mahmoud Khalil must be immediately released and his residency reinstated to affirm this country's commitment to civil liberties.
