Hold Trump Accountable for Indefinitely Jailing Prisoners in CECOT

To: Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Goldman, Sen. Cruz

From: A verified voter in Fort Worth, TX

July 8

write I am writing as a resident of Fort Worth to urge you to take immediate oversight action regarding the deportations of migrants under President Trump, violating U.S. court orders and resulting in the imprisonment of innocent people in El Salvador’s CECOT “mega‑prison.” Shocking reports have since emerged that many of those sent had no prior criminal records in the U.S. A CBS‑60 Minutes investigation found that 75% lacked any criminal history, yet they were incarcerated indefinitely in harsh, windowless cells, deprived of due process, family contact, and even basic hygiene. One of the most egregious cases is that of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran man who was mistakenly deported in direct violation of a 2019 court order. While at CECOT, he reportedly endured psychological torture, severe beatings, malnutrition, and isolation, losing over 30 pounds in just weeks. Though he had never been convicted of a crime, the administration called him an MS‑13 member—claims later disproved by Salvadoran officials. This raises grave constitutional and humanitarian concerns: the executive branch flagrantly disregarded federal court authority, stripped individuals of due process, and subjected them to torture-like conditions in a secretive foreign prison. El Salvador now states that the U.S. retains legal responsibility for their detention—a position at odds with Trump’s assertions. I urge you to: 1. Support congressional investigations into the executive’s illegal use of the Alien Enemies Act and cooperation with foreign prisons. 2. Promote legislation that codifies judicial authority over deportation decisions, preventing detention in foreign facilities. 3. Demand accountability for individuals wrongly deported and detained—such as Abrego Garcia—and ensure comprehensive protections when due to return to the U.S. Preventing another violation of constitutional rights demands robust oversight. I respectfully ask that you introduce or support measures to safeguard due process and prevent U.S. citizens or migrants from being subject to secretive and inhumane foreign detention policies. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I hope to see you champion justice and uphold constitutional principles on behalf of all Texans.
