Accountability matters

To: Rep. Davids, Sen. Moran, Sen. Marshall

From: A verified voter in Ottawa, KS

June 20

The senseless murder of Kohen Wiley at the hands of Mississippi police should be an alarming wake up call for every legislator in the country. Police brutality, insufficient training, and lack of accountability have led to this moment. In which a one year old is murdered in their family's vehicle for an alleged crime that didn't even occur. And quite frankly, I don't care if they thought a crime WAS committed. Police officers should be deescalating tense situations, not immediately being judge, jury, and executioner. Too long across the country the blue line has meant that police officers who cross lines get protection. I don't know any other profession who wants to protect and keep their worst. If it truly is only a few bad apples, then those apples need to go. They need to use their funds for more training on de-escalation techniques, not bigger and fancier weapons with which to kill citizens. Police reform is long overdue.
