I am writing to urge you, as a state leader, to take an active and visible stand against the unprecedented overreach by former President Trump—most recently through his sweeping and economically dangerous tariffs announced on April 2, 2025. These actions are destabilizing, autocratic in tone, and clearly intended to bypass both constitutional limits and democratic norms.
Washington State cannot afford to proceed as if this is politics as usual. The federal government’s unchecked actions are already harming our economy and undermining trust in democratic governance. Silence from state leaders—at a time when our national institutions are being tested—is complicity.
I call on you to:
• Publicly condemn these tariffs and the dangerous expansion of executive power they represent.
• Coordinate with other governors and state legislators nationwide to oppose this policy and signal that the states will not quietly absorb the damage.
• Support state-level actions that mitigate economic harm and assert the rights of states to defend their industries and residents from federal overreach.
• Pressure our federal delegation to act forcefully and visibly rather than continuing with business as usual.
This is a moment for political courage. We need our state officials to step up, speak out, and lead. Please do not allow Washington State to be a passive bystander while our democratic foundations are being pushed to the brink.
