Protect Social Security Benefits and Restore SSA Operations

To: Rep. Ciscomani, Sen. Gallego, Sen. Kelly

February 9

I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to protect Social Security benefits and restore the Social Security Administration's ability to serve the 72.5 million Americans who depend on this essential program. The Trump administration announced on October 7, 2025, that it is considering eliminating age consideration when evaluating applications for Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income. This change would disproportionately prevent older Americans with disabilities from qualifying for benefits they have earned and desperately need. I ask you to publicly oppose this proposal and work to ensure age remains a factor in disability determinations. The Department of Government Efficiency has created chaos within the SSA through significant workforce reductions and policy changes that were later reversed. According to a whistleblower complaint filed on August 27, 2025, by the SSA's Chief Data Officer, DOGE uploaded the agency's entire database containing sensitive personal information of over 300 million Americans to an unsecured cloud server. This reckless action exposed Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, and immigration statuses to potential identity theft and fraud. SSA claims have reached record volumes while the agency faces severe staffing shortages. The SSA has stopped publicly reporting performance metrics and shifted critical staff away from field offices, making it harder for elderly and disabled Americans to access their benefits. The agency's predominantly elderly and disabled customer base cannot rely solely on online portals for support. I urge you to condemn the workforce cuts, office closures, and service disruptions at the Social Security Administration. Congress must demand adequate SSA staffing, transparent performance data, and accountability for the security breach. Social Security benefits are a lifeline that millions of Americans have earned through decades of work, and they deserve an agency that can efficiently and securely deliver those benefits.
