H.R. 1 Is a Path to Fascism — Join Us on the Front Lines to Stop It
To: Sen. Wyden, Sen. Merkley
From: A verified voter in Myrtle Creek, OR
June 7, 2025
Thank you for speaking out against H.R. 1. We know the bill hasn’t reached a vote in the Senate yet, but your public opposition already matters. And as this fight intensifies, we’re asking you to go even further.
H.R. 1 isn’t just cruel—it’s dangerous. It slashes food assistance, restricts Medicaid, guts environmental programs, attacks trans Americans, criminalizes poverty, and rewards billionaires and war profiteers. It empowers the wealthy and punishes the poor. It is the legislative embodiment of a rising authoritarian movement.
But one of the most disturbing pieces of this bill is what it does to the judicial system. H.R. 1 would strip federal judges of their ability to hold government officials in contempt. If that happens, there is nothing stopping a President—especially one like Donald Trump—from simply ignoring court orders. It removes one of the last remaining checks on executive abuse. That’s not reform. That’s the architecture of dictatorship.
This bill is not just about policy. It’s about power—and who has it. And Donald Trump and his enablers are laying the legal foundation for fascism.
We appreciate your opposition, but in this moment, we need more than votes or statements. We need you to join us in the streets. Imagine the message it would send for sitting U.S. Senators to march with their constituents against this bill, against authoritarianism, and in defense of democracy itself.
We also urge you to publicly denounce Donald Trump for what he is—a threat to this country—and to call for his impeachment. His open contempt for the Constitution, his corruption, his authoritarian rhetoric, and his role in dismantling democratic norms cannot be ignored any longer. He is not fit to lead, and the longer we avoid saying that plainly, the more power he accumulates.
We know this may be uncomfortable. It may break protocol. But protocol is failing us. And we are calling on our leaders to match the urgency of this moment with courage, visibility, and solidarity.
We are standing up. We are fighting back. And we are asking you to stand with us—not just in votes, but in public, in the streets, on the front lines of the movement to save our democracy.
