Ensure California’s Clean and Just Energy Transition with Nuclear Energy

To: Asm. Wicks, Gov. Newsom, Sen. Skinner

From: A constituent in Berkeley, CA

February 14

California has the goal of 100% zero-carbon electricity sales and economy-wide net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, and a goal of 90% clean electricity by 2035. Despite this ambitious goal, we still receive 50% of our electricity from natural gas and are the nation’s leading importer of energy, receiving 30% from across state lines. California has one nuclear plant, Diablo Canyon, that currently supplies 10% of our state’s electricity and was recently prolonged in order to meet our energy needs. But if we are to move forward in enacting a clean & just transition, we need ALL energy sources on the table, including nuclear energy. However, current legislation, Warren Alquist Act § 25524.1 and § 25524.2, prohibits the construction of new nuclear plants in the state. As a concerned citizen, I encourage you to have the courage to look into nuclear and repeal this legislation. Thank you.
