An Open Letter

To: Sen. Gonzalez, Asm. Lowenthal, Gov. Newsom

From: A constituent in Long Beach, CA

July 25

I’m writing to express deep concern about the Executive Order titled “Ending Crime and Disorder on America’s Streets.” This order promotes civil commitment to involuntarily institutionalize unhoused people and those with mental illness — indefinitely and without due process. The language is vague and dangerous. Terms like “endemic vagrancy” and “appropriate facilities” leave the door wide open for abuse. People can be picked up simply for living on the streets, then detained with no clear standards, timelines, or protections. Given the regime’s disregard for rule of law — like its use of ICE to detain immigrants — almost anyone could be picked up and detained indefinitely. Plus, with incentives tied to each person housed, this creates a new prison pipeline with unknown consequences. We cannot let civil liberties be erased under the false promise of public safety. I urge you to oppose any efforts to implement or fund these policies.
