I’m urging you to oppose the rollback of federal fuel-efficiency standards. Lowering these standards will raise fuel costs for everyday Americans—whether they drive electric, hybrid, or gas-powered cars—and weaken our long-term economic competitiveness.
Stronger efficiency rules consistently save drivers money. The previous standards were on track for roughly 50 MPG by 2031, helping families spend less at the pump and keeping U.S. automakers competitive in a global market that is rapidly moving toward efficient and advanced technologies.
Cutting the target to 34 MPG by 2031 means cars will burn more fuel, pushing long-term costs higher for American drivers. It also hands a clear advantage to foreign manufacturers who are already investing in more efficient, lower-cost vehicles.
This rollback isn’t about consumer choice. It forces Americans to pay more for fuel while putting U.S. companies and workers at a disadvantage. Administrations from both parties—including Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush—strengthened efficiency rules because they understood the economic and national-security benefits of reducing fuel consumption.
Congress should act immediately by:
• Holding oversight hearings into the political pressure behind this rollback
• Requiring a full analysis of long-term consumer costs
• Blocking this rule through legislative or budget measures
Please stand up for American families, workers, and industry. This rollback only benefits oil companies and foreign competitors, and it will leave Americans paying more for years to come.
