I’m writing as a concerned constituent to urge you to address what I believe is a serious misuse of the presidential clemency power. Former President Donald Trump’s decision to commute the sentence of former Representative George Santos raises serious concerns about fairness, accountability, and respect for the rule of law.
The clemency power exists to correct injustice and show mercy, not to protect political allies or reward loyalty. When used for personal or political gain, it damages public confidence in equal justice and weakens the moral authority of the presidency. Legal experts have long stressed that this power must serve the public good, not private interests.
Granting clemency to political associates undermines trust in the impartiality of our justice system and reduces deterrence for future misconduct, especially in white-collar crimes. It also risks normalizing corruption by signaling that political connections can outweigh accountability. Without oversight and transparency, this authority can easily become a tool of favoritism rather than fairness.
To preserve the integrity of this constitutional power, I urge you to:
Support legislation that increases transparency around presidential clemency, including timely reporting to Congress.
Call for hearings to examine whether clemency has been used for personal or political advantage.
Advocate reforms that ensure clemency serves justice and public trust, not political expedience.
As your constituent, I ask that you take action to protect the credibility of our democratic institutions. No person, regardless of position or influence, should be beyond the reach of the law. Please act to restore integrity to the clemency process and reaffirm that it exists to serve justice, not personal interest.
