We must urge against any cuts to the Peace Corps, an agency that has enjoyed longstanding bipartisan support and promotes people-to-people diplomacy around the world. Despite its minuscule budget of just $430.5 million in fiscal year 2024 – less than a tenth of one percent of the total federal budget – the Peace Corps has struggled to meet staffing goals in recent years. Its volunteers work tirelessly in 61 countries across sectors like education, health, and environmental protection. Cutting funds would undermine this vital people-powered development work at a time when strengthening communities globally is paramount. The Peace Corps exemplifies American values of service and cooperation; gutting it would deal a self-inflicted blow to U.S. interests and standing abroad. We call for robust funding to not just maintain but expand the Peace Corps' footprint, allowing more volunteers to make positive impacts through grassroots efforts worldwide.
