You Knew the Harm the Bill Would Cause and You Voted Yes Anyway.

To: Rep. Kennedy, Sen. Curtis, Sen. Lee

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

July 3, 2025

As your constituent I'm writing because I'm deeply disappointed about your vote in favor of the budget bill. You knew this bill would add $3.3 trillion to the national debt. You knew it would cut Medicaid and food stamps for thousands of Utahns, and still, you voted yes. You knew it would gut Medicaid, taking health coverage away from 17 million people — including 180,000 Utahns — and result in 15,000 preventable deaths every year. And still, you voted yes. You knew it would “defund” Planned Parenthood— resulting in the shutting down of over 200 health clinics and blocking more than a million patients from accessing essential health care: birth control, cancer screenings, STI treatment, and wellness exams. And still, you voted yes. You knew this wasn't about balanced budgets or saving money. And you knew it wasn't about waste or fraud. It was about hurting the very people you were elected to serve and doing it anyway. You weren't voting for Utah and now the consequences you ignored are going to be impacting your constituents. You voted for the largest transfer of wealth in this nation’s history: the transfer of billions of dollars from the poorest people to wealthiest. Shame on you. May the God you believe in have mercy on your selfish, greedy, heartless soul. This wasn’t just a vote, it was a betrayal at the deepest levels. When thousands of Utah families lose Medicaid coverage, rural hospitals shut their doors, and hungry children walk by empty shelves at their local food bank, the true consequences of this bill will become visible to everyone. Shame on you.
