Why Blame Immigrants When Congress Already Found the Real Fix for Housing Costs? I am asking you to correct the record on what’s actually driving housing costs and to push for full implementation of the housing legislation Congress already passed, rather than let immigrants take the blame for a crisis rooted in zoning and interest rates. On November 13, 2025, Vice President JD Vance told Fox News that home prices had “doubled” during the previous administration and pointed to millions of immigrants in the country illegally as a primary cause. He repeated a similar claim at a December 2, 2025 Cabinet meeting, saying homes had become unaffordable because “we had 20 million illegal aliens in this country taking homes that ought by right to go to American citizens.” Independent fact-checkers found the actual increase in new home sale prices was at most 37 percent, not double. The Pew Research Center estimates roughly 14 million people were living in the U.S. without legal status as of 2023 — up from 10.2 million in 2019, but far short of the 20 to 30 million figures being cited. What frustrates me most is that Congress already did the real work here. The bipartisan ROAD to Housing Act, negotiated by Chairman Tim Scott and Ranking Member Elizabeth Warren, passed the Senate 85-5 and the House 358-32 in June 2026 — the first bipartisan housing markup in over a decade — and it targets zoning restrictions and underbuilding, not immigration. I watch my own rent climb every year, and I want it fixed with real solutions. When leaders point at immigrant neighbors instead of the zoning boards and mortgage rates actually driving my bills up, it doesn’t lower my rent — it just divides my community while the real problem sits unaddressed. I am asking you to: 1 Publicly cite accurate housing data instead of inflated immigration figures when discussing affordability. 2 Push for full funding and oversight of the ROAD to Housing Act’s implementation, including the GAO reporting on housing supply the bill requires. 3 Push back publicly when colleagues misstate data to justify immigration crackdowns. Congress already found the fix. There’s no reason to keep blaming immigrant families instead of finishing the job. Thank you for representing me on this.
