Co-Sponsor reauthorization of autism cares act

To: Rep. Pocan, Sen. Baldwin, Sen. Johnson

From: A constituent in Madison, WI

July 16

I am writing to you as a concerned constituent and advocate for autistic individuals and their families. I urge you to co-sponsor and support the reauthorization of the Autism Collaboration, Accountability, Research, Education, and Support (CARES) Act. This crucial legislation, originally enacted in 2006 and reauthorized in 2014 and 2019, has played a significant role in advancing research, services, and supports for autistic individuals. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects an estimated 1 in 36 children in the United States. The Autism CARES Act has been instrumental in ensuring that federal resources are allocated towards better understanding and addressing the needs of this growing population. Specifically, the Act supports research into the causes and treatments of autism, enhances coordination among federal agencies, and improves services for autistic individuals and their families across their lifespan. The reauthorization of the Autism CARES Act is essential for several reasons: 1. **Continued Research and Innovation**: Ongoing research is vital to uncovering the underlying causes of autism and developing effective interventions. The Act ensures sustained funding for essential research efforts conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other agencies. 2. **Improved Services and Support**: The Autism CARES Act supports programs that provide critical services to individuals with autism, including early intervention, education, and transition services. These programs are essential for helping and supporting autistic individuals in leading fulfilling and productive lives. 3. **Increased Awareness and Understanding**: The Act promotes public awareness and understanding of autism, reducing stigma and promoting inclusion. Greater awareness leads to more supportive communities and better opportunities for autistic individuals. 4. **Enhanced Coordination**: The Act facilitates collaboration among federal agencies, ensuring that resources are used efficiently and effectively to address the diverse needs of the autistic community. The Autism CARES Act has made significant strides in improving the lives of autistic individuals and their families, but there is still much work to be done. By reauthorizing this critical legislation, we can continue to build on the progress made and ensure that autistic individuals receive the support and services they need to thrive. I respectfully urge you to co-sponsor the reauthorization of the Autism CARES Act and to work with your colleagues to ensure its swift passage. Your support will make a meaningful difference in the lives of millions of Americans. Thank you for your attention to this important matter. I look forward to your positive response and continued advocacy for the autistic community.
