I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed “One Big Beautiful Bill” (OBBBA), currently under consideration in Congress. While the bill is presented as a comprehensive solution to various national issues, it introduces a multitude of problematic provisions that could have detrimental effects on our economy, healthcare system, and environment. I urge you to vote against this legislation. 1. Massive Cuts to Medicaid and Health Coverage The OBBBA proposes nearly $800 billion in cuts to Medicaid over the next decade, including new work and reporting requirements for adult beneficiaries without children. According to the Congressional Budget Office, these changes could result in at least 7.6 million Americans losing their health coverage by 2034 . Additionally, the bill allows for the expiration of enhanced tax credits for Affordable Care Act marketplace plans, potentially increasing premiums and reducing access to healthcare for millions . 2. Repeal of Essential Clean Energy Incentives The bill seeks to repeal or phase out critical clean energy tax credits, including those for clean vehicles, residential energy efficiency, and clean hydrogen production. These credits have spurred significant private investment in renewable energy, creating jobs and reducing carbon emissions. Eliminating them could lead to the loss of approximately 830,000 jobs by 2030 and hinder progress toward a sustainable energy future . 3. Unprecedented Increase in National Debt OBBBA includes a $4 trillion increase in the debt limit, potentially adding up to $2.8 trillion to the national debt by 2034 . This substantial rise in debt could have long-term negative implications for our economy, including higher interest rates and reduced fiscal flexibility. 4. Expansion of the SALT Deduction The bill proposes raising the cap on the state and local tax (SALT) deduction from $10,000 to $40,000. This change primarily benefits high-income earners in high-tax states, disproportionately favoring the wealthy and exacerbating income inequality . 5. Restrictions on State-Level AI Regulation OBBBA includes a ten-year limitation on state legislation concerning artificial intelligence, potentially preventing states from implementing necessary safeguards against AI-related risks such as deepfakes, privacy violations, and unethical uses . 6. Potential Job Losses and Economic Disruption Beyond the clean energy sector, other provisions in the bill could lead to significant job losses and economic instability. In conclusion, the “One Big Beautiful Bill” presents numerous risks that outweigh its potential benefits. I urge you to consider the long-term consequences of this legislation and vote against its passage. Our country deserves policies that promote sustainable growth, equitable healthcare access, and environmental responsibility. Thank you for your attention.
