I am writing to demand that you immediately initiate impeachment proceedings against President Trump and members of his administration under Article 2, Section 4 of the Constitution for high crimes and misdemeanors. Recent reporting by the Washington Post reveals that Trump allies are circulating a 17-page draft executive order that would declare a national emergency over elections based on allegations of Chinese interference in the 2020 election that were conclusively disproven by the U.S. intelligence community in 2021. The intelligence assessment found that China "considered but did not deploy influence efforts intended to change the outcome of the US Presidential election." This draft order would grant Trump sweeping powers to ban mail-in ballots and voting machines. Peter Ticktin, a lawyer promoting the order, claims to be in "certain coordination" with the White House and states the order would allow Trump to ban these voting methods "as the vectors of foreign interference." This represents an unconstitutional attempt to seize control of elections and potentially cancel the midterm elections entirely. Trump has already declared his intent to bypass Congress, stating "There will be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!" He admitted he is "searching the depths of Legal Arguments not yet articulated or vetted" to push the SAVE Act voter suppression bill. During his State of the Union address, he claimed "the only way [Democrats] can get elected is to cheat. And we're going to stop it." He has repeatedly suggested nationalizing elections or canceling the midterms altogether. While experts say such an order would be illegal, Trump has a documented history of openly defying court orders. His tariffs remained in place for over a year before the Supreme Court struck them down. We cannot wait for lengthy court battles while our democracy hangs in the balance. This is a blatant attempt to hold onto power despite the will of the people. I urge you to act immediately to defend our Constitution and protect free and fair elections by initiating impeachment proceedings now.
