The Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) poses a threat to free speech online and endangers access to crucial resources for marginalized communities, especially LGBTQ+ youth. While concerns about children's online safety are valid, enabling censorship that harms the most vulnerable is not the solution. KOSA's "duty of care" model could pressure social media platforms to censor content about gender identity, reproductive healthcare, and other lifelines under the guise of protecting minors. Instead of pursuing KOSA, Congress should work to protect all internet users by passing comprehensive federal data privacy legislation and measures that do not jeopardize online communities that marginalized groups depend on. I urge you to reject KOSA and find alternative approaches that prioritize child safety without compromising free expression and access to vital information and support systems.
