Vote Against FISA Section 702 Reauthorization Without Major Reforms
To: Sen. Kelly, Sen. Gallego
From: A constituent in Tucson, AZ
April 17
Please vote no on any extension or reauthorization of FISA Section 702 (warrantless surveillance authority) unless it includes significant amendments to protect Americans’ privacy rights. For too long, innocent Americans have been caught up in the dragnet of the increasingly pervasive surveillance state.
This program allows intelligence agencies to collect communications from U.S. persons without warrants when they interact with targeted foreigners, leading to widespread “backdoor searches” of American data. The recent House passage of a short-term extension to April 30 via voice vote sidestepped reforms, despite opposition from privacy advocates and some Republicans like Rep. Andy Biggs (AZ-05).
Stronger safeguards—such as mandatory warrants for U.S. person queries, closing the data broker loophole, and enhanced FISA Court oversight—are essential before any renewal. With the program expiring April 20 absent action, your vote can demand accountability and prevent further erosion of the Fourth Amendment.
Thank you for representing Arizona’s values of liberty and limited government.
