I’m writing to urge you to oppose the so-called “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility” (SAVE) Act — H.R. 22 / S.128 — a deeply flawed and unnecessary bill that would make it harder for eligible Alaskans to vote.
This legislation might sound harmless on the surface, but in reality, it would block countless eligible voters—especially rural Alaskans—from participating in our democracy. Requiring a birth certificate or passport in person just to register is unrealistic and discriminatory. Most Americans don’t carry these documents around, and many—especially elders, Alaska Natives, people in remote villages, and those who’ve changed names—struggle to access them at all.
This bill completely ignores the unique realities of life in Alaska, where travel is expensive, government offices are few and far between, and broadband is still unreliable in many areas. The SAVE Act creates more barriers, not more security.
There is no evidence of widespread voter fraud—this is a solution in search of a problem. What it will do is suppress the vote of the very people who need their voices heard the most.
Protect our democracy. Protect Alaskans. Please vote NO on the SAVE Act.
