I am writing as your constituent to demand decisive action to dismantle Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and replace it with a humane, accountable immigration system rooted in human rights and due process. ICE, as it currently operates, inflicts widespread harm on families and communities. Its record includes family separation, prolonged and abusive detention, denial of due process, and the creation of pervasive fear that keeps people from seeking medical care, reporting crimes, or sending their children to school. These are not isolated failures — they are systemic and inherent to the agency’s design and mandate. Continuing to fund and expand ICE is a political choice. It is a choice to normalize mass detention, to funnel public money into for-profit detention centers, and to accept the trauma inflicted on children and families as collateral damage. This is morally indefensible and incompatible with the values this country claims to uphold. Abolishing ICE does not mean abandoning immigration governance. It means ending a failed enforcement-first model and replacing it with evidence-based alternatives that work. I urge you to: - End immigration detention as a default practice and close for-profit detention facilities. - Invest in community-based alternatives to detention that ensure compliance without destroying families. - Guarantee access to legal counsel and fair asylum procedures. - Transfer civil immigration responsibilities to agencies focused on service, transparency, and accountability — not punishment. - Use your oversight and budget authority to block further expansion of ICE’s enforcement apparatus. History will judge how elected officials responded to this moment. I expect you to use your power to end policies that terrorize families and to actively support legislation that dismantles ICE and builds a humane immigration system in its place. I will be closely following your actions on this issue.
