Protest Unlawful Deportations and Attacks on Immigrants and Protesters

To: Rep. Pocan, Sen. Johnson, Sen. Baldwin

From: A constituent in Fitchburg, WI

April 8

You must take action against recent and ongoing violations of civil rights and due process carried out by the Trump administration against immigrants, lawful residents, and peaceful student protesters. The following incidents demand immediate congressional oversight: Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident, was unlawfully deported to El Salvador despite no due process. Rumeysa Ozturk, a Fulbright Scholar, was ambushed outside her apartment in Massachusetts and detained despite having a valid F-1 visa. Badar Khan Suri, a postdoctoral researcher, was taken by ICE because of the suspected political views of his Palestinian wife. Mahmoud Khalil, a lawful permanent resident and Columbia University graduate, was detained by ICE after agents revoked his green card on the spot. He is now being held in a private prison in Louisiana with no charges filed. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has revoked at least 300 student visas, apparently targeting individuals for their pro-Palestinian views. The administration is also using the Alien Enemies Act of 1798—meant for wartime—to deport hundreds of Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador’s notorious CECOT prison without due process. Many of these individuals have no criminal records and were detained solely based on appearance or suspicion. These actions represent a dangerous abuse of power. They target individuals for their speech, associations, and national origin, and they violate the core principles of the U.S. Constitution. Congress must not remain silent in the face of such overreach. I urge you to: 1) Demand the release and return of Mahmoud Khalil, Rumeysa Ozturk, and Badar Khan Suri. 2) Investigate the misuse of the Alien Enemies Act and visa revocations. 3) Ensure that no administration can use immigration law as a weapon against peaceful dissent or constitutionally protected speech. Our nation must not allow the erosion of due process, free speech, and basic human rights. I am counting on you to stand up for justice.
