Representative,
I am writing to ask you to press the State Department to revoke Flávio Bolsonaro's visa and to honor our extradition treaty with Brazil.
Days after losing Brazil's presidential election, Senator Bolsonaro defied a Supreme Court order to surrender his passports.
He crossed into Argentina on foot, boarded a private plane to Ecuador, and flew on to Miami, and the State Department issued visas for his family.
He did this to avoid an investigation into embezzlement and money laundering. His immunity as a senator expires in January.
This is not a political refugee.
This is a politician escaping accountability in his own country's courts, and the United States rolled out the welcome mat.
We have seen this before. His father fled to Florida after losing in 2022, and his supporters attacked Brazil's government while he waited here.
We should not repeat that mistake.
The United States used to be the country that pressured others to stop sheltering fugitive strongmen.
Moscow is where the powerful go to escape their own courts. It should never be Miami.
I ask you to:
• Call on the State Department to review and revoke the visas issued to the Bolsonaro family
• Publicly support honoring the US-Brazil extradition treaty if Brazilian courts request his return
• Oppose any use of US immigration law as a shield for foreign officials evading prosecution
The rule of law does not stop at our border.
Please act.
Sincerely,
A voting constituent
