I am writing to express my deep alarm over the recent arrest of Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan by federal agents — an act that raises urgent concerns about the integrity of our democracy and the rule of law.
Arresting a sitting judge over a courtroom disagreement about a type of warrant crosses a dangerous line. If federal agents had the wrong warrant, the solution was not to subvert judicial authority but to correct the warrant through proper legal channels. Instead, this administration chose the authoritarian path — treating a judge as a criminal for exercising judicial discretion.
This is not about public safety. It is about consolidating executive power and intimidating an independent judiciary — a hallmark of authoritarian regimes.
Judges must be free to make decisions without fear of retaliation from the executive branch. If we allow this pattern to continue, we will wake up to find ourselves in a country where the judiciary no longer serves as a check on government power but operates under its threat.
I urge you to immediately and forcefully speak out against this abuse of power. Congress must investigate this arrest and reaffirm the independence of the judiciary.
Failure to act now will embolden even more dangerous overreach.
Democracy requires constant vigilance. Please be on the right side of history.
