Condemn Trump's Lawsuit Threat Against CAP — Impeach, Convict, and Remove

To: Sen. Husted, Sen. Moreno, Rep. Joyce

From: A constituent in Willoughby, OH

August 23

Condemn Trump's $5 billion legal threat against the Center for American Progress, and do your job: protect the First Amendment. This is a blatant attack on free speech — a lawsuit threat designed to silence a research organization for publishing facts the administration finds inconvenient. These are grounds for impeachment under Article II, Section 4, and you need to act on that now. CAP's July 13 report found that National Guard deployments in Washington DC, Memphis, and Los Angeles — costing an estimated $1.7 billion — produced no measurable reduction in crime. That's not defamation. That's data. Trump's personal lawyer sent a retraction demand anyway. CAP's president Neera Tanden called it exactly what it is: "a transparent attempt to silence us." Using a $5 billion lawsuit to coerce a think tank into retracting legitimate research is an abuse of power and a textbook authoritarian move. The First Amendment exists to protect the publication of facts that challenge those in power. This unconstitutional power grab crosses that line. Impeach, convict, and remove everyone involved in this attack on free speech. Anything less is a failure to uphold your oath.
